BEING A MALE TEACHER, BEING A FEMALE TEACHER

​Not long ago, I wrote: “Daily we see many teachers crossing and walking along streets in the city, but there are also many thousands of them who do not walk along streets, instead they navigate rivers, walk through bridle paths, and many of them after many weeks of staying in their communities go down to a city or a populated area nearby. That teacher is the teacher who understands the commitment and spirit to be above those adverse conditions and is focused on teaching, and overcomes everything to be with the students”. … Nowadays, overnight, and for little more than 100 days now,  many things have changed, and with those changes many of our teachers are not with us anymore. They stopped navigating our Amazonian rivers, they stopped walking through bridle paths; now at home, many are working hard to bring on-line or through other remote channels their teachings to the homes of each of their students. We can also say that today many suffer from the effects of this pandemic or have been infected.

In spite of this situation,  -and I state that our teachers are valuable and very important- they possess a mystic that maintains them in their fair fights for the welfare of education, as well as for their professional and personal development. To be a teacher today is to give oneself and to  serve others, imparting instruction that enables the growth and development of the personality of the students. Our teachers overcome material and moral adversities that jeopardize their teachings. They encourage the growth of students as persons enabling the consolidation of their personality, so that it develops in a comprehensive manner and with integrity. To be a teacher in Peru demands double strength: ethical and moral. Ethical, because the teacher should maintain a steady attitude towards reflection, which means to observe, to assimilate, to analyze reality and then to determine those aspects that should be transformed. And it is moral, because teachers perform in a set of norms inspired by values that also regulate their attitudes and professional and personal behaviors.

Having that in mind, they prepare by acquiring an inclusive view towards cultural, linguistic and geographical diversity, and also to respond to a diversity of subjective views and perspectives from the students. The challenges of the Peruvian reality require from them a commitment to transforming our education. That is not resolved only in one unique way. Not always the problem can be reduced to the economy as only factor, we should also have a vision and a conception of education. Do we educate to form persons or only to instruct them? What do we educate for? Do we educate to maintain the same reality and inequity? Do we educate to forge a more human, more equal, much more fair and participative society?

As we celebrate Teachers´ Day soon, we cannot fail to make a stop to reflect in solidarity on the situation that thousands of teachers are going through and suffering today. Let us join them by extending our hands -extending not only our financial resources but also our pedagogical ones. May our reflection turn into actions. Yet, it is also entirely appropriate to speak out, so that authorities may benefit them. We do know about the difficult situation of our country, we are all inside this difficult situation and, of course, so are our teachers. Through ethical, serious, intelligent and fair commitment to teaching practices we can contribute to changing education. Changes are achieved with a lot of hard work, changes are achieved with changes, and we should also go through changes in our minds and hearts. I think that we, the teachers, are called to bring about and become the agents of the historical changes necessary in the Peruvian education.

SER MAESTRO, SER MAESTRA  

Hace no mucho escribía: “Diariamente vemos muchos maestros que cruzan y transitan por las calles de la ciudad, pero existen también muchos miles de ellos que no transitan por calles, sino que navegan en ríos, caminan por caminos de herradura, y muchos que luego de varias semanas de estar en sus comunidades bajan a una ciudad o a un centro poblado cercano. Ese maestro, es el maestro que, con vocación y compromiso, sabe elevarse por encima de aquellas condiciones desfavorables para el ejercicio docente, y superan todo por estar con sus alumnos y alumnas.” … Hoy inesperadamente y desde hace un poco más de 100 días, muchas cosas han cambiado y con estos cambios, muchos de nuestros maestros ya no están con nosotros. Ellos, dejaron de navegar por nuestros ríos amazónicos, dejaron de caminar por aquellos caminos de herradura, hoy muchos en sus casas están esforzándose por llevar en forma virtual u otros medios remotos, sus enseñanzas a casa de cada uno de sus alumnos y alumnas. También hay que decir, que hoy muchos padecen los efectos de esta pandemia o sufren contagiados. 

No obstante, la situación, afirmo que nuestros maestros son valiosos y muy importantes, poseen una mística que los mantiene en sus justas luchas por el bienestar de la educación, por su desarrollo profesional y personal. Ser docentes hoy, es entregarse en el servicio a los demás, ejerciendo una docencia que permite el crecimiento y desarrollo de la persona de sus estudiantes. Nuestros docentes se sobreponen a las adversidades materiales y morales que atentan contra su magisterio. Propician el crecimiento de la persona del estudiante al lograr que su personalidad se consolide, y se desarrolle de manera integral e integra. Ser maestro en el Perú exige una doble fortaleza: ética y moral. Ética porque debe estar en una permanente actitud de reflexión, que significa observar, asimilar, analizar la realidad y luego determinar aquellos aspectos que deben ser transformados. Y es moral, porque el maestro se desenvuelve dentro de un conjunto de normas inspiradas sobre valores que también regulan sus actitudes y comportamientos profesionales y personales.

Para ello, se preparan con una mirada inclusiva para la diversidad cultural, lingüística, geográfica y también para responder a una diversidad de miradas y perspectivas subjetivas de sus alumnos y alumnas. Los desafíos de la realidad peruana exigen de su parte un compromiso con la transformación de nuestra educación, y ello no solo se resuelve de una sola manera, no siempre el problema se reduce a lo económico como único factor, también debemos tener visión y concepción de la educación. ¿Educamos para formar personas o solo para instruirlas? ¿Para qué educamos? ¿Educamos para mantener la misma realidad e inequidad? o ¿Educamos para forjar una sociedad más humana, más equitativa, mucho más justa y participativa?

Próximos a recordar su día, no debemos dejar de hacer un alto para reflexionar solidariamente en la situación que hoy viven y sienten miles de maestras y maestros.  Sumarnos para extender nuestras manos, extender nuestros recursos no solo económicos sino también pedagógicos. Que nuestra reflexión se transforme en acción. Pero, también es muy oportuno alzar nuestra voz, para que las autoridades los beneficien, sabemos de la difícil situación del País, pero en esta difícil situación estamos todos y naturalmente nuestros maestros. Podemos aportar al cambio de nuestra educación con nuestro compromiso ético, serio, inteligente y justo en el ejercicio de la docencia. Los cambios se logran con mucho trabajo, los cambios se logran con cambios, también debemos experimentar cambios en nuestra mente y en el corazón. Pienso que los maestros y maestras, estamos llamados a propiciar y ser agentes al mismo tiempo, de los cambios históricos y necesarios en la educación peruana.

En estos momentos, en vísperas de otro cuarto jueves de noviembre, estoy contemplando el lindo centro de mesa que tenemos en el comedor ya desde principios de noviembre. Nos estamos preparando para celebrar el Día de Acción de Gracias. Entonces, rápidamente hecho una mirada al primer Día de Acción de Gracias que fue celebrado en 1621 por los peregrinos, y que duró tres días.

Ustedes se preguntarán cómo habrá sido –¡excelente pregunta!
Bueno, fue celebrado por unos 90 nativos norteamericanos y 53 peregrinos. Cuentan que en esa primera cena cuando se sentaron a comer, comieron bayas y otras frutas, jamón, almejas, langosta, calabaza, calabacín, carne de venado y aves acuáticas.

​- Y… ¿el pavo?¿dónde está? 
- Me alegra que lo pregunten. En realidad, no era común comer pavo en esta celebración, sino hasta después de 1800.
 
Hoy en día, el Día de Acción de Gracias es un feriado nacional en los Estados Unidos. Y algunas personas hasta pueden decir: “¡Feliz Día del Pavo!” ¿Les suena esto raro? Lo que pasa es que hay gente a la que le gusta enfatizar “la gran cena con el pavo”. Pero la comida varía también de casa en casa. Por ejemplo, hay gente a la que le gusta preparar pollo en aderezo o salsa de búfalo.
 
En estos días de noviembre siempre me deleito con la variedad de pays –o pies— que puedo encontrar, ¡pues miren este mapa!

Display on my dinner table in November, by Luz Miranda-Valencia

​Right now -on the eve of another fourth Thursday of November- I´m contemplating the lovely display we´ve had since the beginning of November on our dinner table. We´re preparing ourselves to celebrate Thanksgiving, and this gives me a peek into the first thanksgiving that was celebrated in 1621 by the pilgrims, which lasted 3 days.

You may wonder how it was –excellent question! Well, it was attended by about 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. It is said that at the first thanksgiving dinner when they sat down to eat, they ate berries, fruit, ham, clams, lobster, pumpkin, squash, venison and waterfowl.

​But -where´s the turkey? I´m happy you asked! Really, eating turkey for this event was uncommon until after 1800.
 
Nowadays, Thanksgiving is a national holiday. And some people may say: “Happy Turkey Day!” Does this sound weird to your ears? Actually, some people want to emphasize the big meal with turkey! But meal varies from household to household -for example, some people love preparing the buffalo chicken dip.
 
All days of November, I´m always delighted by the variety of pies I can find -just see on the map below!

But what´s important is the attitude of Gratitude and to remember that "there´s always something to be grateful for and reasons to rejoice."

​On February 14th 2018, in Parkland, Florida, we witnessed the cruel mass shooting at a high-school made by a former student expelled from the attacked school. After mourning their classmates and teachers, the survivors of that attack were mobilized by the model “in service of the public good.” At the mass shooting, three faculty members from that school gave their lives to save students. So did Peter Wang, a 15-year-old high-schooler who was a member of the junior ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) and whose dream was to attend West Point Military Academy. Peter Wang helped fellow Parkland students escape gunfire by holding a door open for fellow students to escape. This tragedy has elicited survivor students to join for a change against gun violence and for the regulation of the purchase and possession of firearms -that right now is being discussed in all the United States of America. I have been overwhelmed by both the indifference to avoid more gun violence and the brave, gifted and justice-loving high-schoolers. Do we have to wait for tragedies to turn into the innovators for a big change? How can K-12 education deal with reality to let students and society be able to override gun violence to progress?

It is clear that the sea surrounding Florida and the Caribbean belongs to a natural recycling area for renewal of the Earth in order to achieve the stability and balance of our planet´s climate. For this reason, as there are great quantities of energy spread in the area at certain times of the year, Florida should not be a place to inhabit the whole year. Of course, there are exceptional places where people can escape major damage. Areas of certain elevation with hills and mountains where people can be safe in times of cyclones and hurricanes –as I see in the case of Cuba and Puerto Rico, for example. The Cuban mountains can reach up to about 6600 feet (2000 meters) above sea level, while the ones in Puerto Rico can be as high as about 4,266 feet (1300 meters) above sea level.
 
When you read about the geography and geology of Florida, you can conclude that Florida is a “swamp;" it is a place for only alligators, lizards, in fact, for the local flora and fauna. Florida should be exclusively a resort place for vacations and a place for ecological research in mild seasons of the year. In Tampa, Florida –where I live— the mild season is from November to May. It is very warm and hot from May on, and we depend a lot on air conditioning.
 
People have not been properly informed about coming to live in Florida, since living and staying the whole year in Florida can be very dangerous. There are places in Florida that remind me of some places of Lima, Peru -my homeland-, where some negligent people without municipal permit build houses on the dangerous banks of rivers although they know they are going against the local law and the laws of nature  -so, in Lima every year or almost every year, during the rainy season landslides “huaycos” appear and destroy everything. In the case of Florida, the rulers have been intimidated and/or tempted by the money of rich land developers and knowingly have accepted the construction of whole cities. I support this idea, because geographical and geological research must have been done before permits for construction were given.

​I have found that tropical cyclones or hurricanes are important, because they have an important function in our planet, as stated in the following:
​“Though their effects on human populations are often devastating, tropical        cyclones can relieve drought conditions. They also carry heat energy away from the tropics and transport it toward temperate latitudes, which may play an important role in modulating regional and global climate.”[1]
 
As I deep-dived into my thoughts, I remembered that the infinite wisdom of the Eternal –God—lovingly takes care of us and knows what to do to make creation perfect. So, that praiseworthy work that that infinite wisdom of the Eternal has done in our bodies came to my mind, and I was reminded of the appendix. The following  might be a weird parallelism for you, however, let me explain it to you.

When I was twelve years old, one of my beloved cousins was rushed to a clinic for emergency surgery after suffering appendicitis. When I asked why that had happened to her, because she was so young, an adult told me that there was no explanation. Likewise, when I asked what the appendix was for, since it was removed from her, they told me that the appendix was a remnant of ancient humans and indeed nobody knew what it was for, and also that during the process of evolution it had lost its real purpose.
​The appendix is a small organ of about 2.756 inches to 3.15 inches (7 to 8 centimeters) long and of 0.157 inch to 0.315 inch (4 to 8 millimeters) in diameter, it sits in the lower right abdomen and is a small attachment connected to the caecum that has the shape of a finger.

​For decades, I thought that a better answer was still pending. Nevertheless, as decades went by, I was pleasantly surprised when I read in the news that they had just discovered that the appendix did actually have a function, and a crucial one. In 2007, a prestigious American university, Duke University, discovered the following about the appendix and its function:
​“Long denigrated as vestigial or useless, the appendix now appears to have a       reason to be - as a "safe house" for the beneficial bacteria living in the human gut. The gut is populated with different microbes that help the digestive system break down the foods we eat. In return, the gut provides nourishment and safety to the bacteria. Parker now believes that the immune system cells found in the appendix are there to protect, rather than harm, the good bacteria.”[2]
 
A catastrophe is to come to some parts of Florida this first week of September of 2017, with global warming it becomes imperative that city life be adapted and made according to what mother nature -who cries out for the reconsideration of its existence- demands. The Earth, our planet, needs to recycle itself constantly. Consistently, we see that it has its own defense mechanism to guarantee the life of future generations. Let us not forget that ancient native American proverb: “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children."  May the infinite wisdom of the Eternal, for its love, bless the creation always.

Simplemente este mar de Florida y del Caribe es una zona de reciclaje o de renovación para el logro de la estabilidad y balance climático del planeta, por lo tanto, como hay un gran despliegue de energía en este mar en ciertas temporadas del año, en Florida no debería vivir la gente durante todo el año. La excepción para que la gente no sufra mayores estragos es solo allí donde hay lugares de altura, con cerros y montañas donde la gente puede estar a salvo en épocas de ciclones o huracanes, como veo que es el caso de Cuba y Puerto Rico, por ejemplo. Las montañas cubanas pueden llegar a ser de hasta 2.000 metros de altura sobre el nivel del mar y las portorriqueñas llegan a más de 1.300 metros sobre el nivel del mar. 

Si se lee sobre la geografía y geología de Florida se puede llegar a concluir que Florida es un "pantano", una zona donde solo deben vivir los lagartos, las lagartijas, en fin, la flora y la fauna designadas para este lugar. Florida debería ser solamente un lugar de esparcimiento para vacacionar y también un lugar de estudio ecológico durante las estaciones benignas del año. En Tampa, Florida -donde resido-, el buen tiempo es de noviembre a mayo. Hace mucho calor a partir de mayo y dependemos muchísimo del aire acondicionado.
 
No se ha informado adecuadamente a la gente para que venga  a vivir a Florida porque quedarse todo el año en Florida puede ser muy peligroso. Hay lugares de Florida que me recuerdan a lugares de Lima, Perú -mi tierra natal-, donde hay gente negligente que sin permiso municipal construye casas en riberas peligrosas a sabiendas de que están yendo contra la ley local y las leyes de la naturaleza… así, en Lima, cada año o casi todos los años viene el huayco y se lleva todo. En el caso de Florida, los gobernantes se han dejado amedrentar y/o tentar por el dinero de los empresarios dueños de constructoras, los llamados land developers, porque a sabiendas han dejado que construyan ciudades enteras– y digo esto porque anticipadamente tienen que haber hecho estudios geográficos y geológicos.

Investigando encontré que es importante que haya estos ciclones y huracanes porque tienen una importante función en nuestro planeta, como lo que dice a continuación:
“Aunque sus efectos en las poblaciones y barcos pueden ser catastróficos, los ciclones tropicales pueden reducir los efectos de una sequía. Además, transportan el calor de los trópicos a latitudes más templadas, lo que hace que sean un importante mecanismo de la circulación atmosférica global que mantiene en equilibrio de la troposfera y mantiene relativamente estable y cálida la temperatura terrestre”. [1]

Por otra parte, recordé que la infinita sabiduría de lo eterno -Dios- nos cuida con amor y sabe cómo hacer para que la creación siga siendo perfecta. También vino a mi mente el gran trabajo realizado en nuestros cuerpos por esa infinita sabiduría de lo eterno, y entonces me acordé del apéndice. Quizá les parezca un paralelo extraño, sin embargo, permítanme explicarlo.
 
Cuando tenía doce años una de mis queridas primas fue llevada de emergencia a una clínica para ser operada del apéndice. Cuando pregunté por qué le había sucedido eso siendo ella tan joven, me dijeron que no había explicación; y cuando pregunté para qué servía el apéndice pues ella ya no lo tenía debido a su apendicitis y extracción, me dijeron que el apéndice era un rezago del ser humano primitivo, que en realidad nadie sabía para qué servía y que durante la evolución se había perdido su verdadera función. Como es de saber, el apéndice es un órgano pequeño de entre siete a ocho centímetros de largo y de cuatro a ocho milímetros de diámetro que se ubica en la parte inferior derecha del abdomen, es una prolongación del ciego y tiene la forma de un dedo.

​Por décadas pensé que no se me había dado la mejor respuesta y que aún estaba pendiente. No obstante, con el paso de las décadas, fue grata mi sorpresa cuando leí en una noticia que se acababa de descubrir que el apéndice, efectivamente, sí tenía una función, y de vital importancia.
Una prestigiosa universidad estadounidense, Duke University, descubrió
-entre 2007 y 2009- lo siguiente sobre el apéndice:
(…) la principal función del apéndice es la de albergar bacterias, las cuales componen la flora intestinal y cumplen funciones fundamentales en nuestro organismo. Es decir, su función principal es la de hacer posible que determinados microbios puedan crecer para controlar y estimular la acción de nuestra flora intestinal, permitiendo la regulación de las funciones de nuestra flora intestinal ante el menor riesgo de infección en nuestro colon o en nuestro intestino. Nos encontramos, por tanto, ante un órgano cuya función principal es de tipo inmunológico. De hecho, ¿sabías que forma parte de nuestro sistema linfático? En palabras de los investigadores, al parecer el apéndice actuaría como un refugio para bacterias buenas, las cuales nuestro organismo puede utilizar para ‘reiniciar’ al intestino luego de un ataque de cólera o de disentería.[2]
 
La catástrofe en algunas partes de Florida se avecina en esta primera semana del mes de setiembre de 2017, y con el calentamiento global es imperioso que se adecue y adapte la vida en las ciudades conforme a lo que nos exige hoy la madre naturaleza, que clama por la reconsideración de su existencia. La Tierra, nuestro hogar, necesita reciclarse de manera permanente. Constantemente vemos que tiene su propio mecanismo de defensa para garantizar la vida de las próximas generaciones. No olvidemos un antiguo proverbio de los pueblos nativos de Norteamérica: “No heredamos la Tierra de nuestros ancestros, la prestamos de nuestros hijos”.  Que la infinita sabiduría de lo eterno en su amor bendiga siempre su creación.
